Cirque de CBR
We started as Solco Acro, formed in Canberra in 2013, as a woman's acrobatics, aerial dance & physical theatre troupe. As of 2021 have changed our name to Cirque de CBR, to create a more inclusive sense to our community. We create interdisciplinary work with a focus on layered narratives and sense of place, creating both a visual and an emotional experience. We use choreography in the air and on the ground and see ourselves as part of the modern circus movement. A key interest is creating more avenues for high quality local performances, after noticing the dominance of interstate acts.
In 2014, we were part of an Arts ACT Grant to develop “Sealskin, Soulskin”. A 30 min theatre performance, retelling the Jungian fable ‘Seal woman’, using aerial apparatuses, spoken word and physical theatre. Past performances include TEDxCanberra 2017, Spiderverse, part of the immersive multimedia show ‘Haigiography’, at the You are Here Festival, with an ensemble of reflective, climbing arachnids. In 2016 we collaborated with local dancer Alison Plevey to devise ‘Wiggle Room’, with a sell-out season at Gorman House Arts Centre for the inaugural Ralph Indie Creative Arts Season. Wiggle Room explored issues of space – who gets it, and who does not – and was described as ‘a stunner’, ‘mesmerising’ and ‘hilarious’. ‘More Plastic than Fish’ explored issues of consumption and sustainability in a post-apocalyptic world at Art Not Apart in 2016. From 2015 - 2021, we've performed at the Dragon Dreaming festival and for various private functions in Canberra, with our lastest performance at the Hyatt for their First National Annual Conference. We are based out of Aerial Sports in Mitchell as their resident performance troupe. You will also see many of us teaching at Aerial Sports as well as performing in the studio showcases.
As local Canberrans, we are available for local events and festivals, as well as interstate performances. We offer anything from full shows, acts for event entertainment, including aerial & ground acts, to small intimate aerial performances. The type of performance can be tailored to venues – depending on rigging options. Aerial Acts require a certified structure to rig from, which we will assess prior to a performance. For outdoor performances, we use a free standing aerial rig. Contact us for our performance details, requirements and pricing.
